KIDS AND COMMUNION

A guide for parents, grandparents, and caregivers

At Christ the Good Shepherd we welcome children to participate in all aspects of church life, including communion. In case you like to know more how this works, here are some frequently asked questions:

1. What is Holy Communion?
Holy Communion, also called the Eucharist, or the Lord's Supper is a sacrament, a sacred act which we observe based on a command of Jesus.

2. What happens in Holy Communion?
We bless bread and wine (and grape juice) by giving thanks to God, and we celebrate the presence of the risen Christ in these elements.

3. Who can participate?
Everyone. At Christ the Good Shepherd everyone is invited to receive the sacrament: adults and children alike. You do not need to be a member of this or any church in order to participate. But neither should you feel compelled to do so.

4. What if I cannot get up and walk to the front of the church?
Stay seated in the pew, and communion will be brought to you.

5. How do I take communion?
Most Sundays you will be given bread; on some Sundays there will be wafers instead. You have a choice of receiving wine or grape juice. You may receive wine from the common cup or from an individual little glass in the tray. Grape juice is always in the glasses in the tray, and it is always white juice. If you are not sure which is which, simply ask for what you want.

6.  How should my child receive communion?
Most children like to receive communion the same way adults do. Feel free to give them the assistance they need - for example selecting grape juice for them.

7. What if I don't want to receive communion?
You may come forward with everyone and receive a blessing by simply telling us that that's what you want. Or you may remain in the pews for private meditation and prayer.

8. What if my child does not want to receive communion?
Your child may come forward and receive a blessing. Simply tell us that that is what you want. Or your child may remain seated in the pew.

9. What is the right age for a child to receive communion?
Children of all ages are always welcome. But as a parent or caregiver you may wish to have your child wait. Or you may want to consult with the pastor. For more information about that see below.

10.What about communion instruction?
Communion Instruction is available for people of all ages. Simply schedule an appointment with the pastor.
Periodically there are also classes offered for children with instruction that is appropriate to the children's age. Remember: for young children their number one instructors are parents, grandparents, and caregivers. Children learn a lot by observing you, your body language, and your attitude towards communion.

11. Is there a First Communion Celebration?
If you and your child have chosen to wait with communion until the child is a certain age, then First Communion is a special event that should be planned and celebrated in a special way. This celebration would make most sense if it is preceded by instruction. (See #10)  The pastor will assist you in planning this event.

12. My child has always taken communion. There is no point in celebrating "First" Communion. Is there another celebration?
Your child can receive communion instruction - either individually or as part of a group. In conclusion of that instruction we will celebrate Communion Consecration.

13. What about taking communion at other churches?
Most churches welcome all adults for communion. Some churches do not offer communion to young children. But if your child is taking communion here, you should make an effort to let that be known to those who serve communion elsewhere. Often it is enough to simply say: "My child does take communion".
