Communion at CGS

Kids and Communion

A guide for parents, grandparents, and caregivers

At Christ the Good Shepherd we welcome children to participate in all aspects of church life, including communion. In case you would like to know more how this works, here are some frequently asked questions:

1. What is Holy Communion?

Holy Communion, also called the Eucharist, or the Lord’s Supper, is a sacrament, a sacred act which we observe based on a command of Jesus.

2. What happens in Holy Communion?

We bless bread and wine (and grape juice) by giving thanks to God, and we celebrate the presence of the risen Christ in these elements.

3. Who can participate?

Everyone. At Christ the Good Shepherd everyone is invited to receive the sacrament: adults and children alike. You do not need to be a member of this or any church in order to participate. But neither should you feel compelled to do so.

4. What if I cannot get up and walk to the front of the church?

Stay seated in the pew, and communion will be brought to you.

5. How do I take communion?

You will be given bread (or a wafer if you prefer). You can drink wine from the common cup or pick up an individual cup of wine or grape juice.

6. How should my child receive communion?

Most children like to receive communion the same way adults do. Feel free to give them the assistance they need—for example, selecting grape juice for them.

7. What if I don’t want to receive communion?

You may come forward with everyone and receive a blessing by simply telling us that that is what you want. Or you may remain in the pews for private meditation and prayer.

8. What if my child does not want to receive communion?

Your child may come forward and receive a blessing. Simply tell us that that is what you want. Or your child may remain seated in the pew.

9. What is the right age for a child to receive communion?

In this congregation children of all ages are always welcome. It is up to the parents or caregivers to decide whether their child should receive communion or a blessing, whatever best reflects the faith of the family.

We also offer First Communion Instruction. Call the office at 266-8022 for more details.
