At the time of death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn and we remember the brevity of life on this earth. The following is an introduction to the end-of-life rituals which we have to offer.
When death has occurred
Funerals and Memorial services Don’t know what to do or where to start? Let us help. We are equipped and experienced to help you construct a funeral or memorial service that will honor your loved one and help you in your grieving process. Planning a funeral, memorial, or committal with us can include:
Pastoral consultation and care
Musician
Printed materials
Facility rental
Coordination with funeral home or mortuary
For such services we do not require that you are a member of the congregation or of the Christian faith, but please be aware that the Lutheran tradition of Christianity is our context. For us, a funeral or memorial service is a time to give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of ours into the hands of God. We will do our best to walk with you as we are equipped.
Interment of remains If you are interested in a committal ceremony at the time of interment we are glad to help you plan and conduct such a ceremony. Planning a committal with us includes:
Pastoral Care and counseling
Printed materials
Facility rental (if necessary)
Coordination with funeral home or mortuary
Facility rental Sometimes people are in need of a larger space than is available at funeral homes. Our facility is available for the rental of space separate from our ministerial service at the time of death. We have many spaces available for worship services, rituals, and receptions. Use of our facilities for funerals, memorial services, and other rituals are subject to the CGS Facility Use Agreement. As a part of this agreement, we may ask you to contract with a Liaison. The Liaison will be your primary contact at Christ the Good Shepherd. They will be available to you at any time, will coordinate with your vendors, and will facilitate a successful use of our facilities.
Expenses
Facility rental The procedures and fees of facility rental can be found in the CGS Facility Use Agreement. If you choose to utilize the services of the congregation to plan and execute your event without utilizing our facilities, an administrative cost of no more than $100 may be charged. All fees must be paid in full at the time of the ceremony unless otherwise arranged with the pastor or office manager. Pastor End-of-life planning is free of charge as a ministry of the pastor. Funerals, memorial services, and committals regardless of location are at the cost of $400 or less as arranged. Sliding scale and hardship relief are available. You will negotiate and contract directly with the pastor. Musicians Our musicians’ fees range from $175 to $250 for a funeral. Fees are dependent on the amount and type of music, additional musicians, necessary rehearsals, and length of event. Sliding scale and hardship relief are available. You will negotiate and contract directly with the musician. Liaison Our liaisons fees average $100. You will negotiate and contract directly with the liaison.
End of life planning
When someone nears the end of their life, we will all react in surprising ways. To give us the space and time to be in this grieving process, it is a loving act to all involved to talk about the end of life before it arrives. Our pastor is glad to meet with you, your family, and your friends in advance of the end of life to help you know your options and discern your wishes. Planning can be done in as little as one or two meetings. We can provide guidance and referrals regarding end-of-life care, mortuary services, funeral and memorial planning, and the interment of remains.
Getting started
This information is intended to be an introduction to a partnership with Christ the Good Shepherd. It is our mission to serve you as best we are able. To begin, please call our church office and speak with our Community Coordinator. Your event will be reserved when the office manager has received the necessary paperwork and deposits according to the CGS Facility Use Agreement.
Member information
Those who have become members of our congregation have entered into a covenant relationship which calls our pastor to preside at our worship services, including funerals, memorials services, and committals. Other officiants and participants are invited to participate at the direction of our pastor. This same covenant relationship extends to our staff musicians. Other musicians may be included or substituted at the discretion of our staff musicians. Members need not contract with a liaison for their funerals, memorial services, or committals. Fees for facility usage, pastoral service, and musicians are waived for all current members of the congregation. Additional participants may require fees and all such arrangements can be made in partnership with our staff. Honorariums to Christ the Good Shepherd, the pastor, or the musicians are acceptable and recommended on the basis of your ability.
